Academics

A Little Something About Our Academics

At our school we work to create independent, self-driven and successful students. Many of our students learn through different learning modalities. We want our students to learn through visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic ways. We work to fit every student's learning style and need but using a variety of teaching methods throughout the school.  At our school we promote learning through experiences and hands on learning. By using a hands on learning approach students become responsible for their learning. Students will research and use a variety of strategies across content areas in order to learn new information. We will use a variety of lectures, hands on activities and inquiry based learning to drive our students.Image result for school clip art

Our school also supports common core learning and uses the standards to support our curriculum. The standards are very important to our students and teachers alike. The standards allow our students to see if they are meeting our learning goals and objectives since they are related directly back to curriculum.  We want our students to be high achievers and on track with the rest of the academic world. We want our students to be excited about learning. By using hands-on approaches students are able to experiment and choose learning topics that interest them most. We want our students to feel independent yet also receive the correct guidance needed in order to excel within our school.

What Does Interdisciplinary Activities Mean?

Interdisciplinary activities is about creating something new by crossing content areas. We work to merge content across subject areas. We work to link subjects in order to create a deeper meaning for our students. We want our students to be able to connect knowledge and create a deeper meaning.Image result for school clip art

Our Interdisciplinary Approach

We will read a variety of books in Language Arts and then perform an experiment in Science that links to the book. Students may be asked to create science journals. You may ask them to write about what they have discovered in their research. This directly links science to the language arts content area.

We will use the same book we read in Language Arts and research the topic in social science and apply it to real life and everyday events. For example, if students are reading a story about the Oregon trail, we will have students research that topic in social science and apply their knowledge from the book to real life events. Also, we have had teachers use concepts from Social Science and have the students write and compose a piece of writing that supports the content in the information learned.

We also have students track data from regions learned in Social Studies and create graphs, data tables and more. Also we will have students track the change in data we see after learning new topics in Science.

We encourage our students to use writing across content areas and apply previous knowledge to content areas. The more students are able to link existing knowledge, the better they will understand new material and create a deeper meaning and understanding of information.
